Those of us who like a certain kind of fiction from the twentieth century, are already great fans of Persephone and Virago. For some time now I have been dimly aware of a Scottish publisher called Greyladies. I knew they published works by Noel Streatfeild, Richmal Crompton, O Douglas to name but a few, but still I resisted the call. Why I have no idea, it was fairly inevitable really.
I am very afraid I have entered upon a new bookish obsession. Not only am I collecting: Persephone, VMCs and Agatha Christie First editions, but I may now actually need, yes need! most of Greyladies catalogue too.
So just a few days ago the first two books from Greyladies arrived, Noel Streatfeild’ s Parson’s Nine and Richmal Crompton’ s Leadon Hill. I was just finishing Love in the Sun when the books arrived and I wanted to read my book club read over the weekend, but having gobbled that up quickly I decided I would start one of my Greyladies books right away. I plumped for Parson’s Nine. I will let you all know how I get on soon, but I suspect the experience will be a positive one.
I know there are plenty of Greyladies fans out there, so recommendations please. It may be a little while before I allow myself the luxury of buying more, but it is fairly certain that I will be.
