There’s a small but growing group over on Facebook that I am very glad to be a member of – Undervalued Mid-20th Century British Women Writers – it does what it says on the tin really. Another place where I can celebrate the writers I love and find out about ones I have yet to read. Recently – Nick – who started the group suggested that we hold a group read in November. After some discussion we hit upon Elizabeth Bowen’s The Hotel – Bowen is an author many of us want to read more of, and The Hotel being her first novel it seemed a good place to start. Our read of The Hotel will begin on November 10th – and naturally anyone is welcome to join us. Elizabeth Bowen is probably not really undervalued – however she is exactly the kind of author members of the group love.
From the back cover:
These were the balmy days of the 1920s. The English, liberated from one long war and not yet faced with the next had – at least when well-off- a confident kind of vitality. The Hotel was a comfortable hotel on the Italian Riviera, run for prosperous English visitors. It was a closed world of wealth and a setting for the inexhaustible comedy of casual personal relationships among a variety of ‘nice’ people, all English, all wittily reflected with characteristic vivacity. Elizabeth Bowen’s wit, and her exact eye for social detail has often been compared to that of Jane Austen, and the similarity is perfectly captured in this, Elizabeth Bowen’s first novel.
I am looking forward to discussing the novel with the other group members, and of course I will review the novel here too.
That brings me onto my next reading challenge.
This year I undertook two main reading challenges: The Great War theme read – with members of the Librarything Virago group ( I have run out of steam a bit, but intend to pick it up again next month) and the 12 novel sequence of Dance to the Music of Time. So having just finished book ten of that twelve I already have my sights set on a new challenge for next year. Karen (from Kaggsy’s bookish ramblings) and I have decided to read the entire nine novels that make up The Forsyte Saga Chronicles.
The Forsyte Saga complete nine novels are available in three volumes:
Volume 1
The Man of Property
In Chancery
To Let
Volume 2
The White Monkey
The Silver Spoon
Swan Song
Volume 3
Maid in Waiting
Flowering Wilderness
Over the River
I recklessly ordered the three volumes from ebay – and I am all set For January. I know January sounds like a long way off but time flies – and it will soon be here. If anyone would like to keep Karen and I company we would love you join us.
Oh and while I have your attention – don’t forget Willa Cather reading week December 7th – 14th – phew!
Oh LOVELY! I adore the Forsyte Saga, but I’ve only re-read it fairly recently (goes and checks … Oh LOOK it was 2007-08 http://librofulltime.wordpress.com/?s=galsworthy I think I will do it again with you two, then). What are you doing, one per month?
Well yes ish! With 9 books over 12 months there is some flexibility. We could maybe work out a schedule nearer the time. Some parts look longer than others so that may play a part.
I only read the first three -ie Volume 1 and saw tv thing which is only based on the first three books. So really looking forward to reading the whole thing.
[…] has mentioned this in her post here, and if anyone wants to read along with us – please join in! The more the merrier! […]
One a month with plenty of time to spare if we get distracted by other books waving at us! 🙂 Your Facebook group sounds lovely, Ali – I read The Hotel last year and enjoyed it very much.
Yes I like the idea of time to spare 🙂
I’m looking forward to The Hotel, I have been meaning to read more Bowen for ages.
The entire Forsyte Saga in little orange Penguins, acquired at a library book sale last year, is sitting on a shelf downstairs, so I’m tempted to join you.
I do like the sound of ‘The Hotel’ and as it’s Elizabeth Bowen’s first novel (I think) it might be interesting to read her novels chronologically – I’d be re-reading some and reading others for the first time – it might be time for a little book-shopping ….
Nothing wrong with a bit of book shopping 🙂
I’d love it if you joined us Jane. Love little orange prnguins too, delightful!
I only seem to have one copy of The Forsyte Saga. Could it be abridged? I’m also looking forward to Willa Cather. The FB group sounds wonderful. I wish I had known about it sooner. I’m going over now to check it out.
It’s great. We’d love you to join us.
I bought the Saga in 2013 as it’s on my Classics Club list so will definitely think about joining you.
Oh great, hope you do 🙂
I’m thinking about joining in with The Forsyte Saga as I’ve been meaning to read it for years! And you’ve reminded me that I really must try something by Elizabeth Bowen soon.
Super! The more the merrier 🙂
And here I swore not to join challenges next year, but I adore the Forsyte Saga (I’ve only read the first three volumes). I’ll have to squeeze in Elizabeth Bowen if I can as she is a favorite. You read so many really great books!
I do try 🙂 glad to be tempting so many to joi.
I loved the first three books (volume 1) of The Forsyte Saga! I’ve been wanting to reread them and purchased the entire saga for my kindle a few months ago. I’m also very curious about Elizabeth Bowen’s first novel.
Two very tempting endeavors!
I think they are yes.:)
I’m giving this some serious thought. I have all the books, bought at the time of the 1967 serialisation (so much better than the later version!) and thoroughly enjoyed back then. I haven’t read them since. At the very least I think I shall have to try and get hold of a DVD version of the television series and follow you that way. It was very true to the books.
Excellent it would be lovely if you joined us 🙂
Oh great idea! I have these already and have only read the first story so far. I’d love to read along with you!
Excellent you will be most welcome 🙂
I’ve been meaning to read The Forsyte Saga for quite some time – I look forward to joining you 🙂
Glad to have you along.
I’d love to read along with the Elizabeth Bowen group. I have all of Bowen’s non-fiction, and love it, but I have not enjoyed her fiction as much. However, I stopped at just a couple books, so I need to give it another chance. The Hotel sounds like a good place to start–thanks for the heads up!
Great I hope you find you enjoy it.
I’ve been thinking about this and wondering if we say we’ll do one set of three per 4-month period, which allows people to go one-a-month … pause each time or catch up. And I will do the Bowen if I get hold of a copy as it does sound like a good one.
Yes that sounds like a pretty good plan. I hope you do join in with The Hotel too, I’m looking forward to it and it’s thin 😉
[…] sort. On November 10th begins the group read of Elizabeth Bowen’s The Hotel, which I talked about here, this is a novel I am really looking forward to, and also looking forward to talking about it with […]
I’ve read all her novels and my personal favourites are 1) The Death of the Heart 2) The Heat of the Day 3) The House in Paris 4) The Last September 5) Eva Trout 6) A World of Love 7) The Little Girls 8) To the North 9) The Hotel and Friends and Relations.
I still have a few to go, but my favourites are probably Death of the Heart, To the North and House in Paris. I enjoyed The Heat of the day and The Hotel and liked The Last September though it’s a little slow.
