So this will be my new occasional midweek post – you know I like an excuse to witter on about books even more than I already do.
Those who know me well may all be shocked to hear I haven’t really bought any books yet this year. *coughs* I have downloaded three or four to my kindle – but they don’t count *innocent face* but I have only bought one proper so far in 2014. It was ‘Deeds not Words’ by local Birmingham author Katharine D’Souza – I read her first novel Park Life last year and look forward to reading this one soon. A shameless plug on her behalf – I urge everyone (especially you Brummies out there) to support Katharine and buy her book. All this angelic non-book buying behaviour could come to a screeching halt this coming weekend – when I go to Stratford upon Avon for a meeting of a few members of the often mentioned Librarything Virago group – there is generally a lot of charity bookshop browsing. I have said I must not buy any books – we shall see what happens.
Having taken a break from participating in the literary blog hop giveaway – I have decided to take part again. Hosted by Judith at Leeswammes blog – it runs from February 8th – 12th – many book bloggers will be taking part – giving away all sorts of bookish prizes – look out for it.
Currently I’m enjoying my re-read of Wilkie Collins ‘The Woman in White’ for #WilkieinWinter – I’m frustrated however to be reading a book of over 600 pages during a fairly slow reading week. I’m out twice this week in the evening – and as I have already mentioned will be out all day on Saturday really eating into my reading time. However what a fantastic book to cosy up with at the end of the day – I have been amazed at how much I have forgotten of it, but I am rather glad I have forgotten a lot of it. Alongside ‘The Woman in White’ I have been reading ‘The Honey Thief’ on my kindle – it was book I was persuaded to download by the wonderful review from Claire. I must admit – the first 20% or so I liked well enough but wasn’t especially wowed by. Now however, I am close to half way through and enjoying it enormously.
I came across a review of a book on the Preferreading blog of some WW1 diaries called Dorethea’s War– which considering the reading challenge I and some others are undertaking this year may turn out to be a book I must track down. – I have added it to my wishlist – but haven’t bought it – yet.
So what are you all reading this week – and are you buying books?
I am reading &Sons by David Gilbert …..but like you Ali I am finding real life frustrating this week……..keeps on getting in the way of reading !
Oh yes it certainly does.
I haven’t been buying books either (well, except for one ebook)! Unfortunately, I just haven’t had as much time for reading over the last two months. I’m hoping that my schedule will lighten up a bit soon. Thanks for mentioning the Literary Blog Hop. Somehow, I missed Judith’s post!
🙂 Hope you will join in with the hop. I’m still deciding what my prize will be.
One day I should reread The Woman in White. I’m sure I’d be surprised how much I’ve forgotten of it as well!
It’s hard to hold all the books we read in our heads isn’t it.
I hate it when I want to read and I can’t! I hope you get more time to get lost in your book soon!
So do I 🙂 I will have to make some time.
I agree that e-books don’t count! Although I have been pretty good so far – mostly I’m downloading free things, although I did just give in to temptation and buy a real book edited by Ruth Reichl (Remembrance of Things Paris) about 60 years of food writing re Paris in Gourmet magazine.
I know all about giing into the temptation of buying books 🙂 – and that sounds like a book that will give you pleasure for years to come.
Thanks for mentioning my blog. Dorothea’s War is a wonderful book so I hope you can get hold of it. I also haven’t bought any books so far this year (apart from a few ebooks which don’t count, of course). I always start the year strong & weaken as time goes on!
Ha ha! Me too. I think I will have to buy Dorothea’s War.
I must remember that buying books on Kindle doesn’t count – I’ve obviously been making a big mistake there 🙂
🙂 if I can’t see actual book spines staring at me -they don’t count.
If I had to count the books I’ve downloaded to kindle so far this year my new year’s resolution to buy no more would have sunk completely without trace.
It seems noone counts ebooks 🙂 not just me then.
I like the ‘I haven’t really bought any books yet this year’ line followed by the kindle confession, then a ‘proper’ book purchase. Oh, the stories we addicts tell ourselves! Hope you manage to get some concentrated reading time soon, Ali.
Thank you I’m planning a do nothing day for Sunday.
I like the idea of a little catch-up between the reviews. And I’m looking forward to reading “Deeds not Words” when you do. I also believe that Kindle books don’t count, as you can’t see them. And I bought more books than you yesterday AND I just had a booky birthday so my TBR is now out of control!
I’m way past out of control now 🙂
I’d like to read more books set in Birmingham. Suggestions? I’ve read Catherine O’Flynn’s great first book. And why are the citizens called Brummies? Is is saying Birmingham really fast? :<))
I don’t know why Birmingham people are called Brummies. I read borh Catherine’s first two books which I loved but haven’t read her most recent novel.
I just bought both D’Souza books on Kindle for $2.99 each.
Oh good. I hope you like rhem.
